The
old oil depot at 500 Chicon in Austin's near East side has had a storied
history. From the Union Oil rail depot built in the 1920's to the proposed
"bathhouse" of the early 80's; this aged concrete and steel structured
was purchased with the intent of conversion to commercial office space.
This appeared, on the surface to be "ambitious" at the very least.
In
coordination with the visionary efforts of Architects, Stern and Bucek, Crescent
embarked on the monumental task of turning this building into a high profile office and
studio for one of Austin's leading graphic design firms.
To
provide more useable space, the center of the main floor was removed to
create an "open" lower level of useable space.

A
small "floating" mezzanine was added above the newly opened area for
additional useable space and additional visual impact.

The
balance of the interiors included a state of the art "break" - kitchen
area, complete with high efficiency appliances
as well as a custom stained, polished, and finished concrete counter top.

The
large mechanical system included air handling devices that could not be moved
through the doors of this 70 year old building
.
Among
the unique exterior features of this project are a center pier supported
concrete handicapped ramp, which not only provides ADA compatible accessibility,
but creates an additional visual interest in the front elevation. And a
"red iron" canopy structure over the main entry.

Below are a
few views of the finished exterior.
